International Conference on Negative CO2 Emissions

Negative emissions technologies (NETs) are technologies that can, directly or indirectly, remove CO2 from the atmosphere. NETs are considered critical to meeting the Paris Agreement target of keep global temperature rise "well below 2 degrees". Carbon capture and storage (CCS) with fossil fuel or biomass plants (BECCS) is considered a critical technology to meet mitigation targets set by the Paris Agreement. However, several drawbacks have limited the uptake of CCS on the required scale. Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) provides an alternative route to recycle carbon dioxide into chemical feedstock and/or synthetic transport fuels that can displace fossil-derived fuels. This work investigates the climate change mitigation potential of converting carbon dioxide into transport fuel.

CO2 Summit III: Pathways to Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Deployment

The last decade has seen increasing penetration of wind power in the UK electricity system to meet greenhouse gas emissions targets. Consequently, periods of excess wind generation and, low demand or limited/full storage capacity, arise. Constraint payments then have to be made to wind farms to curtail their generation to maintain system operability and reliability. This work investigates two possible options to achieve climate change mitigation with this curtailed electricity by: 1) using the power to produce synthetic transport fuels, or 2) using the power to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere directly.
